How It Works

ELDT Theory Training

01

Get Trained

All prospective CDL holders must get trained at a certified institution like Ferrari Driving School. Training with a friend or family member who has a CDL is no longer an option.

02

Theory & Practice

The theory component covers traffic laws, vehicle inspection, and basic safety. The practical component gives students the opportunity to apply learning under a licensed instructor.

03

Get Registered

Ferrari Driving School registers you in the FMCSA national registry, confirming that you have completed all necessary training requirements.

Requirements

Who must complete ELDT?

Obtain a commercial driver's license (Class A or B)
Upgrade from Class B CDL to Class A
Get a passenger (P), school bus (S), or hazmat (H) endorsement for the first time

What to expect

While there is no minimum number of hours required to complete this course, the student must cover all topics required by the FMCSA: orientation, control systems/dashboards, pre-and post-trip inspections, basic control, shifting/operating transmissions, coupling and uncoupling, visual search, communication, and distracted driving speed management.

Ferrari Driving School has designed an easy-to-follow, FMCSA-approved online lesson package that will make sure you are well-prepared to move on to behind-the-wheel training and finally your road test.

There is no final exam — simply finish all the lesson material and as soon as you are done, Ferrari Driving School will upload your certificate to FMCSA's national registry, which will notify the DMV that you have completed the theory portion of the ELDT requirement.

Common Questions

ELDT FAQ

The new ELDT rule is not retroactive, meaning that it only applies to prospective CDL holders. If you already have your CDL, you are not required to take any additional training. It only applies to those who are:

• Getting their CDL for the first time

• Upgrading their existing CDL from Class B to Class A

• Obtaining a new hazmat, passenger, or school bus endorsement

No, the new ELDT rule does not require a specific number of hours. However, it does require that you receive both classroom and behind-the-wheel training. The total amount of time will depend on the institution you choose to attend.

The rule requires training providers like Ferrari Driving School to give students the opportunity to complete both the theory and practical components at their own pace. The most important part of the theory component is the ELDT final exam, which must be completed before you can move on to the practical component. The student must pass with a score of 80% or higher.

Practical training must be conducted in a vehicle that is representative of the type of commercial vehicle you will be driving. Once you have completed both the theory and practical components, your training provider will submit your information to the national registry.
